What can you expect?

Mayday will consist of fellow Brighton residents gathering outside the factory from 8am until around 3:30 in the afternoon. Throughout the day you can expect to hear from speakers, poets and activists. We will share food, chant, hold vigils, dance, all the while resisting the deadly arms trade. It’s essential we have as many of us as early as possible- if you can make it down for 8am, please do so!

Student Bloc will be meeting at Moulsecoomb Station 7:45am. You don’t have to be a student to join them!

What to bring?

  • Weather appropriate clothing
  • Any medication you may need
  • Banners and placards
  • Instruments, pots and pans
  • Water
  • Snacks (or even food to share if you’d like to)

Can I bring my children?

  • Yes! We welcome people of all ages and hope to have things children can engage in and be part of (More details to follow soon)

How long should I come for?

  • As long as you’d like, as long as you can. Mayday will run all day, and we need as many people as possible to hold the space. Even if you can only make it for a bit, please still join us.

Will there be toilets and rest areas?

  • There will be a sheltered latrine toilet nearby
  • There will be a gazebo area away from the factory where you can go if you need first aid or just a little break away from it all.

How do I stay safe at a protest?

  • We always recommend covering your face with a mask. Information about protesters can be used against them.
  • Don’t talk to police! Even if they are being nice or asking about your day. Their job is to gather information about protests and protesters and they are not on our side. They will be there to protect the factory.
  • Look after each other! If you see someone being hassled, alert others and support them.
  • Carry a Bust card- there will be Legal Observers wearing orange bibs who will be carrying bust cards, and more will be available at the Welfare tent.
  • For more info see the Green and Black Cross website

Event Line-up

Protest // Break the Kill Chain // Arms Manufacturers out of Brighton

Wed 20th Feb 2019 3.30 – 5.00pm

The EDO MBM weapons factory in Brighton is owned by Harris (a massive multinational arms corporation). It has produced parts for weaponry sold to countries including Saudi Arabia, Israel, Turkey and the United States, allowing them to commit grave human rights abuses, in violation of international law.

The Brighton factory is expanding for the first time in 15 years, increasing it’s ability to produce deadly weapons.

We want factories that manufacture goods to sustain life and our planet, not destroy them.

Join the demo.
Bring banners, placards and anything to make noise with.

WHY NOW?

On 4th September 2018 Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC) granted planning permission to US arms company Harris Corporation subsidiary EDO MBM Technology Ltd to expand its production of aircraft weapons release systems at its site on Home Farm Road in Brighton (Reference BH2018/01868). This most recent decision to allow EDO MBM to expand comes less than 15 months after planning permission was granted for a two storey side extension (Reference BH2016/05939).

EDO components are being produced for UK-supplied Saudi Tornado and Typhoon warplanes. These warplanes are assisting war crimes carried out by the Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen. The war in Yemen has caused over 60,000 civilian deaths and a widespread famine, with UN OCHA estimating that 8.4 million people are at imminent risk of starvation.

EDO also own the patent for an ‘umbilicus’ – a small cable that feeds geolocation information to a smart bomb in F35 fighter jets sold to Turkey and used to invade Northern Syria / Rojava.

Further, EDO owns the VER-2 (Veritical Ejection Rack), the main bomb rack used on the Israel F-16, which have been used to bomb Gaza. EDO bomb release components are supplied to Israel, Saudi Arabia and US air forces certified for use with cluster bombs, contrary to the Cluster Munitions (Prohibitions) Act 2010.

In 2014, Israel’s aerial bombardment and ground invasion of beseiged Gaza killed over 2,200 Palestinians, nearly a quarter of them children. Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists reports that the Israeli F-16 is the most likely military aircraft delivery system for its nuclear weapons.
